ABRSM and Southbank Sinfonia launch new partnership to help young musicians find their voice

ABRSM and Southbank Sinfonia have announced a new partnership to help musicians become confident, articulate advocates for classical music, which is set to inspire a new generation.

Southbank Sinfonia exists to help graduate musicians establish their careers, further their skills, and fulfil their calling to inspire a younger generation of musical learners. ABRSM’s support will help members of the orchestra become stronger communicators, able to express in words – as powerfully as they can in music – all the rewards that come from music-making.

Such skills underpin the success of Southbank Sinfonia’s Family Concert series, which the players present entirely themselves. The collaboration will explore further ways in which the musicians can help parents and teachers inspire children to engage with music. As part of this, the players will create a series of videos comprising tips and insights, personal stories and elements of performance encouraging younger learners to higher levels of attainment.

Lincoln Abbotts, Executive Director of Strategic Development at ABRSM, said: ‘We’re delighted to support Southbank Sinfonia in nurturing the skills and confidence necessary to engage and inspire school and family audiences, as well as the next generation of performers. These players are the role models for the future – entrepreneurial in approach and excited in practice about the possibilities music can bring.’

James Murphy, Managing Director at Southbank Sinfonia, said: ‘Classical musicians are extraordinarily expressive individuals, but all too rarely do we get to hear what they think and feel. We are delighted to collaborate with ABRSM in helping our players find their voice, granting them the means and experience to become inspirational ambassadors, revealing the everyday personalities behind such virtuosity.’

See Southbank Sinfonia’s players present their next Family Concert at the newly-reopened Queen Elizabeth Hall on Saturday 12 May 2018 as part of Southbank Centre’s ‘Ligeti in Wonderland’ festival.
